China National Railway Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “China Railway Group”) recently launched the first high-speed EMU procurement in 2021. On March 22, China Railway Materials Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Railway Group, announced the purchase of 20.5 sets of 350 kilometers per hour Fuxing intelligent configuration EMUs, a total of 164 vehicles.
In a longer period of time, the annual increase in the number of high-speed EMUs in China will increase by about 416 formations from 2013 to 2020. The annual compound growth rate is about 21.49%. The growth rate has slowed down, but it will continue to increase every year. The growth rate of more than 200 formations has increased rapidly.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the “National Comprehensive Three-dimensional Transportation Network Planning Outline” (hereinafter referred to as the “Outline”) on February 24, and for the first time at the central level determined the national medium and long-term transportation network planning and construction requirements. In terms of high-speed railways, the “Outline” stated that in the next 15 years (2021-2035), China will build 53,700 kilometers of railways, including 32,100 kilometers of high-speed railways, with an average annual growth of 2,140 kilometers of high-speed railways.
As of 2020, the Chinese standard EMU is 9.87 units/100 kilometers. Based on this calculation, the annual demand for new EMUs will be around 211 units in the next 15 years. By 2035, the total increase in EMUs will be around 3165, and the scale of the absolute increase in EMUs can be seen.
As of the end of 2020, the number of national railway passenger cars is 76,000. Among them, there are 31,340 EMUs in the 3918 standard formations.
In 2021, the National Railway Group plans to purchase about 200 EMUs, locomotives and wagons, respectively, about 200 sets, about 370 units, and about 50,000; the investment will be about 30 billion yuan, 8.3 billion yuan and 23 billion yuan respectively. The above plan is only a plan for the beginning of 2021, and adjustments based on actual conditions will not be ruled out in the future.
